Membership in ARES Edmonton Region is open to anyone who holds an amateur radio licence and is a resident in the Edmonton and greater region. Having your own transport is always a real asset because during an emergency members need be able to move around quickly as the situation demands.
The primary role of ARES is to provide backup communications to agencies following a major emergency or disaster. You should have a keen desire to want to be prepared for emergency situations and help to provide emergency communications to the various agencies in and around the City of Edmonton when needed. ARES members are not first responders, however if you happen to be close to an emergency or disaster then you are in a unique position to alert the authorities and report by radio any damage that you observe.
The group typically meets four times a year and from time to time conducts Simulated Emergency Tests (SET) to keep members in practice and to improve their skills. Additionally, members of the group will volunteer for public events, as another means of practicing their communications skills.
Basic training is provided free of charge to members so that they can develop the skills required to transmit messages between agencies following a major emergency or disaster in the area. Members are asked to complete some basic training within 1 year of joining the group.
